Active Road Noise Cancellation - speech enhancement through noise reduction in hands-free systems

Active Road Noise Cancellation (ARNC) is able to reduce the in-vehicle perceived road noise. Road noise is the noise inside vehicles caused by the transmission of the road noise resonances from the tires through the structure of the vehicle to the inside of the vehicle. In this work, the benefit of available ARNC for hands-free systems is shown. Stationary and quasi-stationary vehicle noise is well handled in state-of-the art hands-free systems but fast and variable noise components like impulsive road noise scenarios are challenging. In such situations, the ARNC can work in tandem with a hands-free system to eliminate or suppress such noise types. The paper shows the improvements in a speech situation with a remote party with and without an ARNC system. The paper further proposes a hybrid system in which the ARNC is combined with a noise reduction system.
