An electronic instrument based on BELA - a tool for teaching digital signal processing

Digital signal processing (DSP) is a discipline with increasing importance in a broad variety of applications. DSP is also a mandatory element of many study programs, including Electrical Engineering (EE) at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU).In order to anticipate the rapid technological developments, new teaching methods for DSP in the Bachelors program of EE at DTU are developed making use of these new technological developments. In this contribution, a digital instrument build in a student project, based on the embedded computer platform ”BELA” is presented as an example platform for digital signal processing. The instrument features a number of in- and output interfaces to interact with the implemented algorithm based on a number of commonly used concepts in digital signal processing (FIR filters, IIR filters, delay lines, etc). The latency of the instrument is stable and below 2 ms even though running multiple filters and delay lines in parallel. This instrument serves as a proof-of-concept and as a starting point to develop a low-cost and open-source DSP teaching platform.
