Abstract: Since the first studies about stereophonic amplitude-panning were published in the end of the 1950s, there have been a lot of experiments to determining the relation between the level difference between a pair of loudspeakers and the perceived direction. Interestingly, the results for these panning curves vary a lot between the various studies, especially for large aperture angles of the loudspeaker pair and lateral directions. This contribution compares some of the experimental results from 70 years of amplitude panning, as well as the experimental environments, stimuli, reporting methods, and statical analysis in order to find explanations for the differences in the panning curves.
